Smooth Jazz.com-CD Review Earth Wind & Fire In The Name Of Love When you start thinking about bands that have influenced music over the last several decades, it is impossible not to include Earth Wind & Fire. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, EW&F’s nearly 40-year history includes eight double-platinum albums, two platinum albums and three gold albums. They have been nominated for twenty Grammy awards and eight are currently sitting on their shelves. Since Maurice White first put the group together in 1969 there have been many personnel changes, but probably the most well-known core lineup, Maurice White, Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson are the anchors here on IN THE NAME OF LOVE. As is the case with the best of their 70’s recordings, this project is filled with commanding, dazzling romantic ballads (Bailey can still hit the high notes to send shivers up and down the spine) and old-school horn driven funk that will have you groovin’. Co-written by Maurice White and Brenda Russell, “Change Your Mind” is the first single and is the very definition of “smooth vocal.” “Round and Round” and “Cruising” are also flawless radio-friendly ballads. If you like a bit more retro funk, check out the title track and “Keep It Real” and you’ll be grinning from ear to ear. Anyone who knows me, knows that my personal tastes lean heavily to music of or influenced by the 60’s and 70’s, so listening to IN THE NAME OF LOVE is going to be on the top of my faves for a long time. ~Beth Lewis |
